SAINT JOHNSBURY- The Northeast Kingdom Council On Aging offers many things that benefit the community of the Northeast kingdom. However, one thing is benefiting the community through mail.
The Council On Aging sends out Medicare pamphlets every year around the middle of September. These pamphlets are sent out to give the community information for Medicare enrollment. “It clues them in on whether they want to enroll in a new plan or stick with their old one” says State Health Insurance program Coordinator of the Council On Aging, Andrea Labor. The period in which Vermonters sixty-five and over can enroll for Medicare is October 15th through December 7th. If those who have health care do not enroll in a drug plan in their health plans, they could be penalized if they do not do so before the period ends. What the Council On Aging is trying to accomplish is to make sure that the community is informed about these things so it will save them money in the long run.
Labor also explains that “the booklet has a lot of information in it and usually 2-3 things in it are changed so most people see the booklets as a lot of information that doesn’t pertain to me and they throw it in the trash.” The important thing here is to save these booklets because even though they don’t contain a lot of changes in them now, those changes could still could cost you money.
Things like premiums, deductibles, and prescription costs can change every year within the plans so it's important to know what your plan includes.
