A Community Remembers Melissa Jenkins

jenkinsSAINT JOHNSBURY - Today marks the one year anniversary of Melissa Jenkins' homicide.  But for those that knew her the day means more than that.  This afternoon, Melissa's friends and family gathered for a memorial dinner at The Creamery Restaurant in Danville to celebrate her life.

A science teacher at Saint Johnsbury Academy, Melissa's death shocked both her colleagues and her students.  "She was very kind to everyone," says one of her former students Shane Lacroix, adding "she was also an amazing mother for her young son."

This Saturday, March 29th, the St. Johnsbury community will come together in "Paint the Town Pink", an event put on by Saint Johnsbury Academy.  "Pink was one of Melissa's favorite colors…(in) her last picture for the yearbook she was in pink, so we stuck with pink," said Tammi Cady of Saint Johnsbury Academy.  The event will feature music, speakers, and a slideshow of people that have been seen as role models for students.

Not only is Melissa's life in the classroom being celebrated, but her life outside the classroom as well. "(She was) always drinking her glass of wine on the rocks," says Owner of the Creamery Restaurant Marion Cairns.  "It was fun after work...never a wine glass.  So we're doing that tonight."  Cairns will also never forget the dedication of Jenkins saying "teaching school...working here four nights a week…(I) gave her a lot of credit..she wanted things in her life.  And it was short...it was too short, that's for sure."

A year ago, police say Alan and Patricia Prue of Waterford, VT called Jenkins and told her that they were having car trouble, and asked if she could help them.  Her body was found several days later on Comerford Dam Road in Barnet.  Alan Prue is facing first degree murder charges, while Patricia Prue faces aggravated murder charges.  Both are scheduled to appear in court later this year.
