Community Support for Jenkins' Son

jenkins fundST. JOHNSBURY -- It's been nearly a year since the tragic killing of former St. Johnsbury Academy teacher Melissa Jenkins.

The first anniversary of the murder, coming on Monday, March 25,  is sure to be an emotional one for the family and friends of young 30-year-old. It's also a reminder for the Northeast Kingdom about the importance of coming together as a community.

Most evident is the support of her son, Ty. A YouTube video posted in April of last year features people holding signs for him all across the country.

Overwhelming support came for Jenkin's son Ty as countless NEK business and residents raised money, creating a fund to help Ty when he needs it. A year later this support has not diminished. Businesses in St. Johnsbury have stepped up once again to raise money. Paddy Cakes owner Cindy Poligny said she will be donating $10 of every $15 sale she makes from Easter cakes.

Poligny, who has owned the business for about 8 years, remembers when Jenkins used to bring in her son for treats. "He would always look up at the ceiling and the pinatas," she said.

Poligny isn't the only one donating profits. Susan Ellsworth, Mary Kay dealer in St. Johnsbury. She said she will be giving all profits made for particular items that sell on her website if you mention Melissa Jenkins. Ellsworth says that she is involved because she hopes that the community would do the same for her.

Artistic Gardens, a flower shop located in St. Johnsbury, is hosting a drop-off at Boxcar and Caboose on Railroad Street on Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30. The drop-off will benefit roses, wrapped bouquets, arrangements or bows in pink.
