Investing in K-9's Protection

k9 vestST JOHNSBURY- St. Johnsbury Police Department’s K-9 , Bodie has received a vest that will protect him from stab and bullet wounds while he’s on patrol. This vest was a result of fundraising from the Groupon Grassroots Campaign for Vested interest in K9’s incorporated; which has raised over $335,000 for law enforcement k9 ballistic vests.

K-9 Police Officer, Kevin Barone believes that Bodie’s new vest will help take some weight off his shoulders. “Everywhere I go, he’s right there with me. So to protect that, is a little piece of mind for me.” Barone says speaking of his four-legged crime-stopping companion.

Bodie is just one of over 350 police dogs who have been given these protective vests. All vests given will be embroidered with, “In Memory of K9 Rocco, Pittsburgh Bureau of Police” to remember K-9 officer Rocco who sacrificed his life in the line of duty back in January of 2014.

According to Police Chief Jack Harris, these vests are essential as K9 officers are in greater danger of being harmed than other officers. “The dogs actually have to deal with more danger than we do, if that person’s armed than the first person to get them is the dog.” Says Harris.

Back in 2013, Vested Interest raised over $155,000 in just one week, providing vests for 163 K9 officers in 30 states. Also in 2014, the non-profit raised $335,000 in just over two weeks. This allowed them to provide ballistic vets for 370 K-9 unites in 49 states “They do a lot of work in order to raise money for this. Not just K9 Bodie but K9’s throughout the whole country.” Says Barone talking about K9 Vested Interest’s fundraisers for law enforcement dogs. Each vest has a value between $1795-2234 and has a warranty of five years to protect these K9 officers.

Brandy is a two year old blood hound at St. Johnsbury’s Police department who is still working on her certification but eventually will earn a vest of her own

Vested interest in K9’s is still accepting donations which can be given through their website or can be mailed at P.O Box 9 East Taunton, Ma 02718. They will be selling their 2015 calendar for $15 which will be available now till February 1st. All proceeds will go to providing bullet and stab proof vests.
