UPDATE- The Vermont State College System has decided keep the name of the system as is. The VSC Board of Trustees was looking into the change when Castleton State College changed theirs to Castleton University after the addition of several graduate programs they hope will attract out-of-state and foreign students.
A survey was distributed to faculty, staff, and students that included the original name, three new names, and a section to create a new name. The majority of those who responded voted for the name to remain the same.
VERMONT-- The Vermont State College system is considering a change of name. The system was first given the title of Vermont State Colleges back in 1961 by the Vermont Statute. The VSC governs five "unique institutions" such as Castleton University, Lyndon State College, Johnson State College, Vermont Technical College, and the Community College of Vermont.
The VSC Board of Trustees is considering this change of name because "many people believe our name should reflect the increasingly interconnected nature of our distinctive colleges. A new name would provide an opportunity for building a strong and positive brand that would attract attention to our system and colleges. A new name might better describe a system that now includes a university (Castleton)."
Teachers, staff, and students from all of the Vermont State Colleges were sent an email in the last week asking them to answer a survey, by November 6th, which lists ideas for new names for the system. Those names include Vermont Higher Education System (VHES), Vermont State Higher Education System (VSHES), Vermont State Colleges and University System (VSCUS), Vermont State Colleges (VSC) or at the end of the survey is a spot where someone can suggest their own name.
The Board does recognize that not everyone will want to change the name of the system, and stated that in the email "If a new name does occur, it would likely be taken into effect on July 1st of next year." It will vote on whether or not a name change could happen at its December meeting which is scheduled to take place at Vermont Technical College in Randolph.
