ST. JOHNSBURY- St. Johnsbury School teachers and students alike dawned their best Seuss hats for this years Read Across America Day.Read Across America, a campaign designed by the National Education Association to get children excited about reading, hosts a nationwide celebration that takes place on the school day closest to March 2nd, Dr. Seuss' birthday. The St. Johnsbury School took part in the celebration on Friday expanding on an existing partnership with the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont to in bring in volunteer readers. Since the school has been working with the Farm to School program, enjoying fresh fruits and vegetables at snack time, it made sense to event coordinator, Beth Mallon to tie in the farming theme with the day's reading saying, "its all part of teaching kids healthy choices, healthy food, and sustainability. To have the farmers come in and do the farming theme it brought things together pretty nicely."
Volunteers brought in books and even some very special props for the celebration, like Shirley Richardson who brought in a live goat for the children to get aquatinted with saying, "I brought the goat because the story I read was called the Goat Lady. It solidifes in a child's mind some of the aspects of the story as they get to experience the live animal, and thats important."
The school plans to host their next reading activity day in May, where students will be participating in a book drive.
