St. Johnsbury’s “No Kings Day” Raged Against The Iran War

St. Johnsbury - On Saturday, thousands of towns and cities across the nation engaged in the “No Kings Protest,” and St. Johnsbury was among them.

While the specific focus of the protest varied from person to person, it is fair to say the demonstration targeted the Trump administration as a whole, a sum of its parts rather than one specific issue.

Yet, among the signs of frustration with the administration’s many policy directions, one of the most prominent points of contention was the war in Iran. Many demonstrators voiced concerns regarding the conflict, citing everything from civilian casualties to the impact on the American economy.

“If the United States is going to go to war, you should have Congress agreeing to it. You should have allies like our European allies, who used to be our allies. It should be a multilateral endeavor, if anything,” remarked one demonstrator. “It has wreaked havoc on gas prices and prices for fertilizer. It has led to many more deaths unnecessarily.”

Another protester spoke to the United States’ repeated interventionism of late: “I don't think we have any business in the Middle East. I think if the last three decades of military intervention have shown us anything, it's that we are neither successful nor wanted. There is a good argument for a democracy in Iran, but they used to have a democracy, and it was us who put the Shah in power.”

“It's insane. It's absolutely insane. It's all a matter of distraction. It's just destabilizing the entire world. It's undoing all the good work that was done before. He's putting himself on a currency, which has never been done by a living president—it's all about feeding his ego,” said a protester working with Indivisible St. Johnsbury, the organization that helped coordinate the event.
