ST. JOHNSBURY - Discover St. Johnsbury recently revealed statistics indicating a decrease in new businesses in the downtown area. On a Select Board meeting held on Monday, Gillian Sewake shared their findings from the previous year, noting some downward trends.
Although employment remains strong, the loss of business and the lack of new ones was a major point that Sewake focused on. Local businesses around the area commented on why this may be, with Louise Fellows of the Yarn Bank noting a substantial decrease in Canadian customers.
Other businesses cited economic hardship while others pointed at restrictions with signage as a considerable factor. While the cause is certainly up for debate, the need for new entrepreneurs and new business is certainly a reality.
