Going Bald for a Cure

firefighterST. JOHNSBURY - Saint Johnsbury firefighters gathered outside of the fire station to have their heads shaved in an effort to raise money for cancer awareness and research.

Members and volunteers of the fire department held the event in honor of Janelle Noble, a long time friend of the department, who is recovering from Hodgkins Lymphoma.  Noble came up with the idea of where the money collected from the fundraiser should go, based on her experiences with St. Judes Hospital as a cancer patient, "We decided on St. Jude's because when I was going to Dartmouth at first, I saw children being pushed around in little red wagons with bald heads. Imagining that they were going through what I was about to go through just stopped my breath.".

Everyone in attendance of the event rallied together to support the firefighters in their cause. The firefighters had a positive attitude throughout the event, enjoying eachothers company and cracking jokes about their freshly shaven heads, but although they had a lot of fun...the firefighters never lost sight of the cause they were supporting. Troy Darby, who coordinated the event, relates to the situation with his own life and family as his motivation to do more to support the cause, "I have two kids of my own. It's too bad that kids end up with cancer, but  it's, you know, kind of a fact of life. To support them and get them through their hard times, it's very important.". Although they lost their hair, the members of the St. Johnsbury Fire Department gained a significant victory in the fight against cancer.
