Lyndon Schools Adjusts to Education Standards

Lyndon leaderLYNDON- Lyndon Town School held a school board meeting last night with a few guests. Math Interventionists, Delia Lefebrev and Kathy Nichols were there to explain to the board how they are helping teachers work through new standards of teaching.

Since Vermont formally adopted the Common Core Standards in 2012, teachers are required to teach Math and English Language Arts (ELA) at a different level than the regular curriculum. The school and district brought in specialist to help teachers work through the new standards. At last nights meeting, the Math Interventionists presented a presentation to show the board just what they are doing to help teachers.

The specialist explained they have been giving teachers tools to help engage students in learning. They use items such as dice, BINGO chips, and board games. The teachers also follow the students comprehension level by asking them a series of questions. If the students guess the answer correctly they move on to the next level, but if the students guess wrong, then they get knocked down to an easier level. Their progress is then displayed in the math room, where students identities are numbers, and they can see their expectation levels of learning. These methods are meant to help students and teachers increase math scores within the school.

The school has several subject coaches to help with the Common Core Standards and hope to see improvement through-out the schools.
