Feeding the Northeast Kingdom

actionLYNDONVILLE- The long winter, poverty, and lack of jobs are three daunting struggles in the Northeast Kingdom. Together, those factors leave locals from all over the Northeast Kingdom attempting to pay their bills and provide their families.

Lyndon Rescue partnered up with the Faith in Action Northern Communities Partnership today. Together, they provided many individuals from all over with assistance with the "NEK Food Share Program."

Dave Kerrigan, Crew Chief of Lyndon Rescue, elaborates on the food issues. "I think this is a problem that we're having worldwide. We always hear about the third-world countries, but it's not really talked much about the people in the United States and in our backyard, but it is here," said Kerrigan.

Faith in Action has it's main office in Cabot. This afternoon, food from the Vermont Food Bank in Barre brought a variety of items to Lyndonville. There was a mixture of meats, vegetables, and comfort meals. "We're looking forward to feeding a lot more people. You know, that's our main goal, to get food to folks. It's been a long, hard winter for many, and we need to get the food out there to people who need it," comments Deb Reynolds, Faith in Action Coordinator.

Many others came to the Lyndonville Armory not only to stock up on the $8,000 worth of food, but to also give a helping hand to the event.

Seniors and disabled persons were served from 11:30-12:30 p.m. and all others were served after that from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Lyndon Rescue and Faith in Action plan on teaming up once every month to put on this event for the community. Kerrigan adds, "We're one big family trying to get through this rough time together and they all pitch in to help."

The next Food Share Program will take place in Barton on April 30.
