LYNDON-The Lyndon Freight House offered a magical train ride replicating The Polar Express making only one stop: The North Pole. Last weekend, the ride brought in people from all over.
Working with the Green Mountain Railroad, the Freight House has been able to keep the magic going for the last eight years. Cathy Paris and her family are the ones who originated the ride; they also are the ones who volunteer to be Santa's helpers. They say it's their "gift to the community".
The community really came together this year, as well as people from other communities. Paris told NewsLINC that she had travelers from all over, from Florida to New York and even as far as California. This too was the first year ever they have sold out of tickets for every train ride.
Once on board the train, the families were immediately served hot cocoa and homemade ginger bread men. The conductor began reading the novel. He warned all to hold onto their tickets because the hobo was out looking for a way onto the train.
Upon the books ending, the train was almost at its destination. The children were asked by Santa's helpers to sing, "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" as loud as they could. When they arrived, the North Pole was lit up with beautiful Christmas lights and Mr. and Mrs. Claus waving.
The kids began screaming when they saw Santa boarding the train. He greeted every family; taking pictures, asking what they want for Christmas, and even leaving them with a gift to remember the journey. A silver bell, just like in the book, to forever symbolize the spirit of Christmas.
The children said their goodbyes and shook their bells as the train headed back to Lyndonville. While Christmas is only two weeks away, children know to be on their best behavior hoping a spot on the nice list will get them their wish.
