3SquaresVT Cutbacks

foodshelfLYNDON- The Lyndon Area Food Shelf in Saint Peter's Episcopal Church has seen an increase in people seeking food assistance due to recent cuts made to the 3SquaresVT Program.

3SquaresVT is a federal USDA program helping put three healthy meals on the tables of Vermont residents. The program supplies those in need with a plastic card, much like a credit card, that can then be used to purchase food at most local grocery stores and markets.

The program's benifit cutbacks went into effect November 1st. Today the average assistance from the 3Squares Program is about $30 per week for food. Lyndon and other food shelves throughout Vermont are participating in the 3Squares challenge to raise awareness about the difficulty of living off this low budget assistance.

In only one week, the Lyndon food shelf has helped over 50 families, totaling 145 people. According to hungerfreevermont.com, over 84,000 Vermonters of all ages live in a home that struggles with food. The Lyndon food shelf says they are always seeking volunteers and food donations.
