Friends of the Library

Cobleigh LibraryLYNDON - A group known as "Friends of the Library" held a meeting at the Cobleigh Public Library yesterday. The agenda? To upcoming events, and discuss an upcoming grant deadline.

The "Friends of the Library" group sells books and organizes fundraisers to support the library in Lyndon.  Wednesday the group discussed three upcoming fundraisers.

Next Thursday there will be a silent auction at the Cobleigh Library, with entertainment and refreshments provided.

Coming up in July, a coin drop has been scheduled. Supporters of the library will be able to donate money to the library without having to leave their vehicles.

Lastly was a book sale scheduled for October. The "Friends of the Library" group decided to do away with the yard sale they have done in the past, as profits continued to decrease. The library also thought it would be a good idea to start changing things up.

The library also discussed an upcoming grant, which amounts to $100,000. The request for the grant is due by May 1st, but requires an audit of library funds.

The library isn't sure they'll be able to have that done in time to request the grant. "Friends of the Library" Chair Donna Edwards says "Right now with all the CPA (Certified Public Accountants) so busy with taxes and doing other things... They're just not available to do it. We have some wonderful people that would do it for us but now is not a good time to be asking them because they're very very busy."

Luckily for the library, they were able to receive another grant. After the last bookmobile broke down, the Cobleigh Library has received a large grant to purchase another. After the bookmobile's problems were broadcast on Vermont Public Radio, and later picked up by the National Public Radio, the Manton Foundation caught wind of the story, and offered the library $150,000 towards a new bookmobile.

The estimated cost of the vehicle is $130,000, and the remaining balance is going towards gas and maintenance of the vehicle.
