Lyndon - The Kingdom East School District has begun the process to get their budget revoted.
The Kingdom East School District has found themselves in a pinch with a failed budget. This year's proposed budget was just over $53 million, which was almost a $3 million increase from last year.
The school board released a feedback form for the public to voice their concerns and questions directly to them. This form closed on March 10th, allowing the board to begin the revoting process with public thoughts in mind. The form got 180 responses from staff, parents and community members. That evening, KESD held a board meeting to discuss what the current plan is and what is already in progress.
"We have pushed it out over social media and on the website, it's our pop-up. I think that has been fairly effective at this point" Explained Superintendent Sean McMannon, "We'll continue to do that and hopefully get more responses to bring the finance committee and the full board."
The school board is hopeful that the budget will pass. Despite many concerns and assumptions, the district's original proposed budget has very little room for change.
School Board Chair, Lindsay Carpenter, explained the importance of this budget, "There's a lot about the school board budget that, like it or not, we can't control. When we break it down and we look at the budget, the district can control about 9% of that budget."
Roughly 91% of the district budget is non-negotiable. This includes staff healthcare, special education, special education services, transportation, etc. While the school board has that 9% freedom, they try to focus on making the schools a safe and enjoyable place for their students.
The KESD school board will be continuing the work on their budget over the next few weeks. More information to come.
