Local Bank Confronts Scam

Bank ScamLYNDON - Customers of Community National Bank in Lyndonville have been receiving text messages and emails stating that their debit cards have been deactivated.

"Don't answer it, don't open it, delete it," said Bank President, Stephen Marsh.

The number attempting to contact customers is an 802 area code and is not from anyone associated with Community National Bank. The message says to contact the number that is listed, which is now out of service.

"Somewhere people have used their debit cards and somebody has hacked into somebody's system and picked up on that information," said Marsh. "It is not a hack into our system, it's a hack into a user's system out there."

State Police are investigating where these messages are coming from and how customer's numbers were found.

"We are keeping a close eye on everyone's accounts... and we will never ask for information over the phone or text," said the bank president.

No reports of the message have been cited from the St. Johnsbury branch, but five have been reported from Lyndonville.

The Vermont State Police asks to people not to respond to the message and contact them immediately if the message is recieved.
