Lyndon- Lyndon residents partcipated in the making of lanterns as they sung a song and expressed their creative side in preparation of Lyndon's second annual lantern walk on March 20th.
Kim Credy- Smith is a member of the Lyndon Revitalization task force, a task force aimed at bring the community closer together through the arts. The lantern walk this year is named "Lighten up,it's spring!" The name was chosen for the event because not only do the orginizers want people to come together, but they also want people to celebrate the coming of spring.
Credy-Smith said there was a big turn out of 150 people last year and she hopes this year will bring in a even bigger crowd. She explained the purpose of the event " we do this event to highlight the downtown area, we just thought it would be fun to bring some light and liveliness this time of the year, when it tends to be dark and cold and not many people around. We just thought it would be a fun event to bring people together and bring some light to darkness."
The lanterns are made out of see through paper that has cardstock stapled to the top and is folded into a triangle or square. The lanterns are then decorated using ether water color or makers, in any way the makers imagine. A few examples of what the bunch made were sharks, nature and random astract designs with fringes as at the bottom being one option. The final steps were to glue the pipe cleaners on the top as a handle and stapling a baggie with a tealight inside. Workshop Ellie Barksdale said " The lantern making was very kid friendly with what sizes are available and they are very easy to make at home."
What the event on March 20th will entail is at 7:00pm, people with gather at the Lyndon municipal building with one of three things, a bike that lights will get put on, a lantern or neither, people are just encourged to come and have a good time.
As they march down the street they will be singing a lantern marching song written by a local resident ,"joyful, joyful, we are marching, light your lanterns, be of cheer. Joyful, Joyful, we are marching Vernal Equinox is here."
The group will be heading down main street in the full moon light in hopes to make their lanterns attract attention and interest people in the coming years.
