LYNDON - Flags were waving and trumpets were playing as many saluted the Veterans at Lyndon State College. The fountain in the center of the Vermont state college is being transformed into a park that will help to celebrate all the Veterans that are students at the college.
The president of Lyndon, Dr. Joe Bertolino, stood in the mist of some of the communities veterans as he cut the ribbon to the new park.
Right now phase one is complete, which is the memorial wall, but the park is not even close to being completed.
"Phase two is to get a bench up so people can kind of hangout and reflect on what is going on at Veterans Park and what veterans means to them," says James Nagle who is the President of the LSC Veterans Club. The cost of the total project could reach up to six thousand dollars, which is a lot especially for a student run club. The hardest part however, won't be to come up with the money, it was getting the Veterans to come into the limelight and get recognition on campus.
"The process was long and difficult in terms of pulling the veterans out of the woodwork so to speak who have been previously been just trying to get along unnoticed," said Jason Clark who is the founder of the club. Clark said they have half a dozen fundraisers in the works that will help fund their vision. The final part of the project will be the most important of all and the most powerful. Granite pillars will be put in place with an inscribed roll call of all of the Lyndon students who have proudly served their country.
All three phases will hopefully be completed by the Spring of 2014 when their clubs president walks across the stage and gets his diploma.
