LYNDON - Lyndon's town manager, Dan Hill, said today that the town of Lyndon is planning to begin repaving South Wheelock Road next summer. "It's not going to get cheaper if we wait," Hill said. "So we're going to take the existing funds that we have, sort out what section needs to be done - or what we can afford to do - and do it next summer."
South Wheelock Road is a class two highway that totals a distance of four miles. The road has suffered from years of neglect, and members of Lyndon's select board are eager to begin the repair process before the damage worsens. A second problem is money. The town has $150,000 in savings for the project, and they're eligible to receive an additional $175,000 from the state, but that's only enough to repair about half of the road.
Hill described discussions that he had with the select board about the construction as a battle of two viewpoints. "[We were] trying to determine, do we want to go as far as we can this year and do the worst part of it, which happens to be right in the middle of it? Or do we want to continue to save money, and hopefully do a bigger stretch later on?"
The town ultimately decided to do a stretch of the road next summer. It's unclear as of now exactly how much of the road will be repaved next summer. It's also unclear what the town has planned for the South Wheelock Road beyond next summer.
