LYNDON - Students at Lyndon Institute and St. Johnsbury Academy are getting an opportunity to work on a unique project with the Caledonia County Sheriff's Department. The Sherriff's Department purchased two golf carts to be used in simulated drunk and distracted driving courses; the automotive program at each school will have an opportunity to customize the golf carts however they see fit.
"I wanted something where, instead of us just going and buying a cool looking golf cart, I wanted the students to get involved and build them up, put the big tires on, brush bar, all that stuff," said Caledonia County Sheriff Dean Shatney as he explained the idea for the collaboration. "It's a way that cops can interact with some of the high school students in a good way, in a positive way and have some fun."
In addition to the drunk and distracted driving programs, Shatney also wants to use the carts in the annual Stars and Stripes Festival and the rivalry game between St Johnsbury and Lyndon.
