Crosswalk Concerns

crosswalksLYNDONVILLE- Pedestrians in Lyndonville are concerned with the current condition of crosswalks in town. The issue stems from the angle in which the walks are painted. Crosswalks that were installed last year have already received criticism.

The issue with the current crosswalks is they were never painted at the appropriate 90 degree angle. Instead, the crosswalks were painted at a 45 degree angle. The issue lies with those who are visually impaired.

According to Lyndon Town Municipal Administrator Justin Smith, a resident who is visually impaired brought the problem with the crosswalks to attention.

"In this case, on the Whites Market side it was set eight feet off the road and those are supposed to be at roads edge," said Smith. "If you had a visually impaired person they would know where they are as far as the edge of the road goes."

According to Smith, due to some code changes missed after the original completions of the crosswalks, that led to the need to update them this time.

"When the state came through to do their paving's, there were just some things that got overlooked in code changes," Smith said. "We had an individual in town who is familiar with those codes and the upgrades to those codes walk around and show us some of the issues with those codes from the perspective of someone who is visually impaired."

Construction is already set to take place and be completed by the end of this coming week to help eliminate the danger of the current crosswalks.
