Recount Gives Lyndon New Town Garage

LyndonGarageFinalLYNDON – Following a recount last night by the town’s Board of Civil Authority, the October 8th vote for a combined garage for Lyndonville and the Town of Lyndon still stands.

103 residents voted on the measure, and after the votes were recounted at the town offices, Lyndon Town Clerk Dawn Dwyer announced that the measure had indeed passed by a slim margin of 54 for the garage to 49 against.

The plan to merge the two garages into a new facility at the former Vermont Flex Tubing Company building on Smiths Road has been in the works for months. “Both garages have reached the end of their useful life. They’re both in very poor condition,” said Lyndon Select Board Member Marty Feltus.  The project has been alloted 2.7 million dollars which will go towards renovating the building to accommodate maintenance vehicles and gear.

Town resident Christina LaCroix submitted a request for a recount, which is permitted by the town if a request is submitted within 10 days of a vote.  A request can be made if a resident feels the results were too close or they feel the voting wasn't conducted properly.

Feltus believes that passing the item was beneficial for both the village and town saying, “we simply have to do something, and we would rather do it under our own terms and join the Village and build one single facility that would be good for the next 30 to 40 years."

The village will pay 40 percent of the cost of renovations and the town will cover the other 60 percent. This will lead to an increase in taxes for both towns, with the village seeing rates rise to approximately 120 dollars, and with the town seeing a rate hike of around 52 dollars.
