BARNET - The first event of Paddling For A Cure took place in Barnet on Sunday, Sep. 23.
The event would raise money to the treatment of cancer. Community members could donate money to the cause, kayak or both. Organizers say they wanted a new fun way to fundraise.
“Ways to raise money that’s different than what already out there and this seemed like something that was fun and people would enjoy getting involved in. We were a little concerned about the weather, but like what we said is that, a day being out in the rain is nothing compared to what someone goes through battling cancer.” Said Susan Carr, the organizer of the event.
People did not need to bring their own kayaks because even organizers asked Stuart Farina if he could provide the day with some of his. Mr. Farina said he lost a brother to cancer and his brother’s girlfriend, who died of breast cancer, so that’s why he is so passionate about the event.
The event was from 10am to 5pm. The organizers hoped to get more paddlers out on the water next year.
“Really good cause and hopefully like they said, more birthdays for more people,” said Wayne Carr, the founder of the event.
Organizers hope the second annual Paddling For a Cure event will be more publicized and bring more cancer awareness to the community.
