ATVs Not Slowing Down

atv speed2NORTHEAST KINGDOM - Some riders in the NorthEast Kingdom are not obeying the rules of the road or trail.

Residents in Sutton have been voicing their frustration to the towns selectboard. Since last weeks meeting, the board is in the works of creating a draft to send out to residents about the towns rules and regulations regarding ATVs.

While doing so, the town of Sutton has posted signs stating "no ATVs allowed" and installed a gate on Lane's Way road. That gate cannot be locked because it's a town road, but selectboard member Scott Spenser says they're hoping it will deter riders.

President of the Duck Pond Ridge Runners Bernie Ash says he's seen the unsafe and illegal use of these powerful machines. The speed limit in Sheffield for ATV riders is 25 miles per hour but Ash has seen those rules broken too many times "I've called the police, but by the time they show up, they're gone. You can't blame them, they have many other priorities."

Ash just wants people to slow down and respect other riders. If not he says people get hurt "If you met them at in intersection with a car and the roadside grass is a little high, somebody has to do something about it. I hate to see anybody get hurt. Its happened too many times."
