PEACHAM – Peacham talked about numerous topics regarding the Governance Bill, as well as education finances at last night’s meeting.
The point of the Governance Bill was to combine small public schools around the same area into one, much bigger school. This bill was not passed last spring due to strong disapproval from Vermonters.
Mark Clough, the Chairman of the Peacham school board said that if the bill had passed it would have shut down many small schools and forced them to merge into one larger school.
Vermont State Legislature, Kitty Toll, was at the meeting last night. She said that the decision to not pass the bill was due to more than just finances. “Not every Vermonter feels the same way. Quite often it depends on your own educational experience and what you want for your children. It’s a very emotional issue.” Toll worked to stop the Governance Bill from passing last spring.
There are currently fifty students that are attending Peacham Elementary School this year. According to Clough, that number is the highest number of students than they have seen in recent years.
