PEACHAM - The Peacham Post office is suffering from the tough economy and that is going to force them to reduce their hours.
The Unites States Postal Service, or USPS, proposed a plan that would leave just a four hour window; divided by a lunch break, for people to pick up their mail. The P.O. Box accessibility will stay the same. The town will be forced to cut down hours and also will be forced to reduce the work staff and workers who keep their jobs will lose hours as well.
"I didn't want these cuts," said Peacham resident Olive Cheney. "Cutting back on anything isn't very much fun but I think it will grow on us, this is the best option out of the three."
The new hours will be from eight a.m. to ten a.m. and two-forty five p.m. to four-forty five p.m. during the week. The town has proposed to change the last two hours from three p.m. to five p.m., although that is not official yet. Residents are becoming concerned over the potential new format.
"It's a convenience thing. If you're on your way to some place like St. Johnsbury for instance, I come in when they open in the morning," said Cheney. "Or if I'm late getting home I run in and grab my mail, buy my stamps. This way we have to keep in mind the actual hours and make a point of getting there."
The change is final and will take place within the next forty-five days.
