Senate Passes Food Labeling Bill

gmo updateNORTHEAST KINGDOM- The Vermont Senate has passed a bill that will require food to be labeled if there are genetically modified ingredients used in them. The bill still needs to be passed by the Vermont House to be enacted.

This would make Vermont the first state to have food labels stating the inclusion of GMO's or Genetically Modified Organisms in products. Senate President Pro Tempore John Cambell says Vermont residents have the right to know what is in their food.

Not everyone is on board with this added labeling however, Denis Ward from Hatchand Farms in North Haverhill New Hampshire had a different opinion. Last fall Ward said "There hasn't been any safety issues with GMOs, there's no evidence that they're unsafe. Labeling the GMO's will just put a skull and cross bones on food".

The vote on the bill was 26 in favor with only 2 against. The bill, if enacted, would begin in 2016.
