NEWPORT - Two gunmen have been charged with disorderly conduct, reckless endangerment, and one could be looking at a probation violation charge after their lengthy standoff with police in Newport today.
Police have identified Derick Niles, 36, as one of the suspects in the day's standoff. The 15 year old suspect has not been identified, and police have not yet announced whether the two could possibly be related.
Around 5:30 Wednesday morning police were called to 287 Highland Ave. by Niles claiming there were "400 police officers" surrounding his home.
Federal, state, local, and municipal authorities responded to the scene. They did not find hundreds of officers, but instead, Niles armed with a rifle, and standing on top of a garage. They also found the armed 15 year old boy inside a home ajacent to the garage, and reported that 10 family members were inside. Police tell us that nine of those 10 were children. It is still unclear whether they were being held against their will.
Police evacuated all residents on Highland Ave between West Main St and Pleasant St. during the standoff.
Niles was eventually talked into coming down from the roof by state police without incident, and the State's Attorney will be deciding whether or not he stays at a health facility, or lodged at the state correctional facility.
A female who was one of the 10 inside the home was taken into protective custody. According to police, she was "jeopardizing the investigation."
Police say this was not a domestic related incident. They are also saying that drugs may have been a factor that could have lead to the hallucinations.
