LYNDONVILLE - On Thursday the Vermont house passed a new 4% tax on gas. The house had many discussions and much debate on this topic but in the end a draft of the bill passed with over 100 yes votes and only 37 no votes. Vermonters will see a 7.5% increase in the next two years but phase one of this tax is going to start in May.
If the bill passes Vermonters will never pay a tax less than 13.4 cents per gallon or any more than 19 cents per gallon. When asked about this one Vermonters said that he is still going to fill up so they will just have to pay more, "either way I got to fill up you know... So you just pull in and pay what I got to pay."
Other residents feel that the government needs to cut more wasteful spending before taxing the average person. "I think its kind of unnecessary I think its more of a government problem and they need to figure out where they are wasting money instead of trying to bring in revenue" said Jordan Ricine.
This proposal is set to raise about 36.5 million dollars in revenue.
