Citizen of the Year

citizenoftheyearST. JOHNSBURY - The Northeast Kingdom Chamber of Commerce named Jay Sprout a Barnet resident as its citizen of the year. Sprout has been a reverend at the North Congregational Church in St. Johnsbury for the last 31 years.

Sprout is grateful for the support that he has received over the years and says "it's not typical for a minister to stay in any one church for as long as I have. But I have felt such a place here in St. Johnsbury, a sense of home that I never wanted to be any place else."

The amount of time that Sprout puts into his position as reverend shows how much he really cares about the community. Darcie Mccann from the NEK Chamber of Commerce said “They are out in the community during the weekends. Their volunteering time above and beyond what they have to and what they need to."

Sprout said that going above and beyond is part of his job and that if he only focused on the church then he feels that he would not be being true to the mission.
