Lyndon Police Charging up for 2013 Budget

police budgetLYNDON - After spending nearly $10,000 in automotive repairs last year, the Lyndonville Police department is hoping to receive funding for a new police cruiser.

The Lyndonville Police Department has had a 2004 Dodge Intrepid since 2004, and in that short amount of time its racked up over 160,000 miles.  "When we took it for inspection, we found out that the floorboards were completely rusted through. It's had other motor issues that have had to be fixed this year as well.  And that's just to get through the year," explained Lyndonville Police Chief Jack Harris.

Harris is hoping to replace the Intrepid with a 2012 Dodge Charger, "To get the vehicle, and that's with radio, lights, lettering on the side and everything, we're looking at approximately $28,000."

At the joint meeting of Lyndon Select Board and Board of Trustees Monday night Chief Harris presented the new car proposa in addition to other proposals related to the 2013 budget.  Chief Harris explained that his main concern with the current fleet is safety.  "When I have to send my guys out, I need to know they're coming back, and it really is getting to the point, in that car, that I'm uncomfortable. I think it's a safety issue."

While the new cruiser is the police departments main focus, Chief Harris said he'd also like to see officers receive better compensation. Currently, Lyndonville's police force is paid almost 15% less than officers in areas of similar size. Nothing was finalized at Mondays joint meeting of Lyndon's Select Board and Board of Trustees.
