VSP Launches Missing Person Website

missingpeopleVermont-The Vermont state police recently created a missing persons website, which has information regarding all the current people who have gone missing in the Green Mountain state.  The website, which was launched in March, is to help police search for these missing people.

“Our hope is to create a better public awareness of what we are looking at in these unsolved cases and possibly generate new leads,” said Captain Jp Sinclair from the Vermont State Police.

The new website is user friendly and allows you to search by map to find information regarding the last location, names, pictures, and ages of the people who went missing. Depending on how much information has been reported, their may also be a description of what may have lead to their disappearance. Along with that the site also is a place where police look to get details with unsolved homicide.

“We’re kind of breaking new ground for the state police,” Sinclair said, “Theres the sherifs department, theres local police departments, theres the state police, so some of these homicide historically were scattered about in different places. The knowledge of some particular cases rested with former detectives or former police officers, but there wasn’t an essential database for that.”

In addition to the new website, the Vermont state police reorganized their detective division by adding a major crime unit. Unlike the previous method of crime solving, where the state was divided into four different troops a,b,c,and d and only detectives from one of those troops would investigate the crime, this new system includes taking detectives and commanders from all around the state to form a collaborative effort to save these crimes.

“We have known for years looking around the country at different models of how people investigate homicide that this was by far the most effective way to do it,” said Sinclair.

The Major Crime Unit will be supervised by two Detective Lieutenants as well as six detective sergeants. Members of the unit are assigned headquarters but travel throughout the entire state to deal with crimes.
