Act 46 Affects Peacham

Act 46What schools may be merged together because of act 46 were discussed the other night. Schools include K-8th grade Walden, Peacham, Barnet, and Waterford. Other talks included K-12th grade schools Danville, Cabot, and Twinfield.

Act 46 is put into place to find schools that do not have a sufficient amount of enrollment to run within a budget. This meant that the act would take three smaller schools and combine them to make one larger school. Many believed  this would be a more efficient  and affordable way for tax payers to send their children to school.

Act 46 has become more than just an act over the past year; it is turning into a common household name. For many in the North East Kingdom Act 46 has already shut down schools like the Concord high school. Some opposed the shutting down of the school; sending their children to the Academy was going to be a different environment. The Academy is a larger school than Concord and parents are concerned about their children getting "lost in the pack". Others who were not opposed of the school shutting down understood that it was a way to save money. They felt that their children were still going to get good education even at a bigger institution.

Last night was the fourth meeting to discuss the future of the four schools under the Caledonia Central Supervisory Union. Dr. Mathew Forest who is the superintendent of the schools for Caledonia Supervisory Union is "Looking forward to the community getting together and having those discussions and hopefully some more community attendee so the community is well informed of the process".
