PEACHAM- National Reading day may have already come and gone, but students at Peacham Elementary still celebrated their love for literature as they participated in Read Across Peacham.
The requirement for this event to take place was for the students to earn a certain number of Peacham Pride Points. The students were able to reach their goal of 1500 Pride Points, allowing the school wide celebration to go on as planned.
Faculty members dedicated their time to ensure this day went smoothly. "I love that all the teachers are helping out and really are banding together to make this day happen!"Exclaims Jennifer Williams, the school's librarian.
Despite this day being primarily used to celebrate education; it also serves to teach the students about team work according to Derek Fulton one of the teachers at the school. Fulton states, "This type of activity gets them all working together we have the big pal... little pal system so each older student is the big pal, big buddy for the younger student".
Iliteracy is still a problem in the United States according to The Children's Literacy Foundation, 68% of the nations fourth graders do not read at a proficient level. The foundation goes on to claim that, "one out of six children who do not read at age level by the end of third grade will not graduate from high school".Williams says that part of this day is to encourage students to become passionate about reading. "Reading is so fundamental to education and fostering an interest in that and getting kids excited about reading so we're hoping that this day can do that," states Williams.
Students did not just spend the day reading books, they also created their own books using paper bags. This event stemmed from the Read Across America model which is used to create awareness about reading and encourage children and parents of young children to become passionate about literature.
