Tackling Hunger

hungerbowlNEWPORT- The third annual HungerBowl took place in Newport as a way to benefit the Northeast Kingdom Community Action. Over the weekend, Flag football teams came from all over Vermont to play in Garden Park. In order to play in this tournament, each team had to pay a $100 entry and was asked to donate at least two canned items. The two canned items would go to NEKCA food shelf where it would help those who need assistance.

The HungerBowl is a way to for the community to become closer together while supporting foodshelf. This event hits home for many members of the community including Jason Royer the Co-Director of the tournament. “You know we grew up with not a lot, so we know the need for families to be able to get that food when they can’t always afford it. Especially in the cold and needy months,” said Royer.

Due to the outpouring of support from the teams and the community, Northeast Kingdom Community Action was able to raise almost $3000 as well as over 600 pounds of food. The past two HungerBowls have raised almost $6000 together in the past two years.

Despite the fact teams were there to play against each other; many of them, like Lyndonvile Red Wings player Sam Matthews were just happy to help out the cause. “It’s a blast! I think it’s just awesome for the whole organization,” said Matthews.

Royer echoed Matthew's excitment about raising the money for the community saying, “It’s fantastic. I mean it gives me a sense of, I’m actually doing something for the community and you know giving back.”

The overall champions of this tournament were the NEK Spartans followed by the "We thought this was basketball" team in second place and with the Lyndonville Red Wings winning third place.
