VERMONT- Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders will be running for president in the upcoming 2016 elections. He will be running for the Democratic Party, even though he calls himself a Democratic Socialist.
Sanders says if he is elected, he will be focusing on many issues like unemployment rates, helping the United States to use less fossil fuels, and helping college students pay off their debt. He also believes there should be some changes in the economy.
“Major corporations who do not pay a nickel because they stash their money in the Cayman Islands and other tax havens,” said Sanders.
“The top 1% owns just as much wealth as the bottom 90% and my conclusion is that the type of economics is not only immoral, it is not only wrong, it is unsustainable,” said Sanders.
Sanders is not only against the type of economics, he is against the amount of money being spent on a campaign to become president.
According to Center for Responsive Politics, Hillary Clinton, who will also be running for the 2016 presidential seat, raised over $229.4 million in her 2008 campaign for presidency. The other two finalists, McCain raised over $350 million and Obama raised $750 million.
Sanders is also growing concerned with the higher cost of running a campaign. “I wonder if this day and age if any candidate was able to run a successful campaign without being a billionaire or being in the billionaire class,” said Sanders. He said if no one can do it, it will be a sad state of affairs.
Sanders served the House of Representatives up until 2006 when he was elected to the Senate seat. His 16-year stint in Congress made him the longest-serving independent member in history.
