More Than a Penny

penny saleLYNDONVILLE- The Lyndonville Rotary Club hosted it's 48th annual Penny Sale at Lyndon Institute and for one local person, it was their 47th time attending. Peacham resident Rita Woodward first attended with her husband back in 1968.

"For the first year, we won four or five times," said Woodward. "The first thing we won was a baby carseat, when we didn't have children."

In addition to the Penny Sale, those who attended the event could also take part in the Silent Auction.  All money raised would then be placed back into the community in some way.

"It's community orientated," Woodward said. "And all the money goes back to the community which is great."

According to Penny Sale coordinator Renee Swain, this fundraiser is the largest fundraiser the Rotary Club puts on and each year, they make about $10,000-$15,000. Without the support of local businesses, the event would not be possible.

"Finding 300 items can be a little bit of a challenge," said Swain. "But Rotarians pulled together and we were able to pull it off again this year."

In addition to the money raised, Woodward says the event also allows her to see those who she hasn't seen in a long time. "Seeing a lot of the old people you haven't seen," Woodward said. "[And] getting to holler if you win."

The Lyndonville Rotary Club is also looking for more members, they meet every Wednesday at the Lyndonville First Congregational Church at 12:15 p.m.
