LYNDONVILLE- The Darling Inn Senior Meal Site prepares hot meals for people of all ages, but all of the work that they've done wouldn't be possible without the help from volunteers.
John Findlay use to be a patron at the meal site, but for the past 3 years, has volunteered for them. Some of the duties Findlay completes consist of cleaning, and picking up dishes from the dining room.
"I enjoy it cause I do it for me, but the fun of retirement is I get to choose what I do," said Findlay, who also volunteers at Faith in Action in Lyndonville. "I think back to being fortunate enough to be retired and be in good health is a real blessing."
According to meal site coordinator Cindy Santaw-Brown, volunteers are essential as they prepare close to 200 meals per day. Many of those meals are made and delivered through the Meals on Wheels program.
"The homebound people that we have, for most of them, the driver is the only person that they see," said Santaw-Brown. "There's no other feeling than to see a senior smile when you walk up to the door with a hot meal for them."
When the meal site is in a pinch, Findlay as well as other boardmembers will deliver meals.
"He's kind of like a jack of all trades," said Santaw-Brown, who is beginning to prepare for this year's March for Meals.
March for Meals is a nationwide event that raises awareness of hunger and encourages in our community. For more information, check out Meals on Wheels America.
