Improving an Island

island cleanupMONROE NEW HAMPSHIRE - Improving the Connecticut river for guests.

This weekend volunteers from many river organizations and residents of the town of Monroe came out to improve a piece of land on the Connecticut river called Fiddlehead island.

Using donated materials and their own kayaks, volunteers paddled a mile upstream as part of the Source to Sea River Cleanup organized by the Connecticut River Watershed Council. Volunteer Noah Pollock says their goal is to improve the campsite and cleanup trash that was left behind by others "its to remove all the garbage from this island once you have garbage on an island people then add more to it and it then becomes a pile that grows."

The island sits just north of Dodge River Falls and can hold about 12 campers at a time. Organizer Rachel Rupple said it has needed some work for a long time "just from people going to see it they noticed it needs a little tlc."

Volunteers installed stairs and a picnic table to prevent erosion and using scrap wood, installed signs to map out the campground. Rupple also said there's so many volunteers they are already ahead of schedule " we've had such a good response with people coming today on Saturday that were going to expect to set up the campsite improvements later today."
