ST. JOHNSBURY - The town of St. Johnsbury has been working on a project that separates storm and sewer water into two different pipes.
The project is now in its third and final stage.
The bidding for the project will start in February, and members of the selectboard say this is a crucial to the completion of the project. "We have to get this out to bid and get it started, or we could lose. We have to get it going, and stay on schedule", said Bernie Timson who is on the selectboard.
The separation of sewer and storm water is key to a healthy environment, and right now that is not the case. The overflow of sewage creates a hazard for the surrounding environments when it can leak into the streets and even manhole covers. This project will not only make environmentalists happy, but it will create a safer environment for all.
Property owners in St. Johnsbury have to give their consent for this project when it comes to their piece of property. If the owners do not give their consent however, the construction would be off schedule. So far, the town has raised five million dollars for this specific phase of the project. The streets that would be affected by the construction would be Summer, Winter, Spring, Cliff and Mount Pleasant Street.
