Local Jobs Lost to Hostess Shutdown

hostessstoryST. JOHNSBURY - A Hostess outlet store will close as a result of the company's bankruptcy.

When it does; we will lose something more significant than Twinkies.

The store located on Portland Street has Wonder Bread and Hostess items for sale at a discounted rate. Cindy Chamberlin has worked at the store for 32 years and believes this is about more than little cakes.

"People can't afford the prices in the store, they need these types of stores to feed their families," said Chamberlin.

On November 21, the company announced that it was declaring bankruptcy due to a nationwide Baker's Union strike, see here. The failure to resolve a collective bargaining agreement with 15,000 of the 18,500 workers was too much of a financial burden to overcome.

"It was a terrible decision made over a year ago," said CEO Gregory Rayburn.

"I just feel bad for everybody, myself, all of us losing our jobs and people that count on these stores to feed their families," said Chamberlin.

The outlet store will close for good Saturday at 4 p.m.
