SAINT JOHNSBURY - For the very first time, the Saint Johnsbury Veterans of Foreign War's Auxilary hosted an indoor cornhole tournament for a fundraiser. The competition was put on to raise money for the various veterans programs as well as other organizations they donate money to.

The event drew more people than anticipated, leading the organizers to hope they can make it a yearly fundraising event. "We're hoping we can get a good enough turnout to do an annual thing, to help us raise money for our auxilary to help veterans and their families" said the VFW's Auxilary President, Devin Guertin.

 

Cornhole is a game played with bean bags that are thrown onto boards. The object is to toss the bags through the hole in the board. VFW  "It's similar to horse shoes, but obviously you have a board with a hole in it," said Auxilary member, Denise Bigelow. "You've got to get your bean bags in there and if you throw a bag and it lands on the board you get a point and if it goes in the hole you get three."

More than twenty teams participated in the tournament and gladly paid the twenty dollar entry fee per team. The proceeds will go to different veterans organizations such as VA Hospital's, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and homeless veteran housing. The cornhole tournament is just one of the fundraising events that the St. Johnsbury auxilary hosts.

In addition to the tournament, there were raffle tickets were being sold. The VFW raffled off a set of cornhole boards, one of with an eagle in front of an American flag and the other a deer with the same backdrop, in order to raise even more money for veterans and their families.
