Welcoming Fish to the Waterways

fishLYNDON- Fishing season has finally come and that means it's time to stock streams and rivers. The Bald Fish Hatchery worked hard today in an annual event of stocking waterways with fish.

The fish hatcheries in Vermont are known to raise at least one million fish yearly. 45% of Vermont's fish are dependent on stocking from the hatcheries, the main reason being that fishing is so accessible in the state.

Chris Thompson, Manager of the Bald Fish Hatchery, says, "The rivers have some natural reproduction of trout, but because of the extra fishermen, we like to put in extra fish to make sure everyone has a chance to catch something."

Bald Fish Hatchery stocks local waters with numerous species of trout and salmon that they raise.

Thompson adds, "We stock the rivers to create a lot of fishing opportunities for fishermen."

Not only did Chris Thompson and other members of Bald Fish Hatchery help stock, but also a local boy scout organization joined in this year.

Thompson believes, "It's a small way of giving them an opportunity to do something fun and get out of school for a little while. I'm sure they will be back fishing for these fish sometime soon."
