Lyndon- Fenton W. Chester Arena was a packed house on Saturday afternoon when arch rivals Lyndon Institute took on St.Johnsbury Academy. It was tough love for the Lyndon Vikings as the Hilltoppers blanked them 10-0.
Paul Wheeler Lyndon Institute Athletic Director said this about the rivarly. "The rivalry with the school just eight or nine miles down the road in every sport always creates a little different atmosphere and a little more excitement."
The game was never close as St. Johnsbury scored three goals in fifty seconds, four minutes into the first period. Renat Nigmatullin led the Hilltopper's to victory with five points scoring a hat trick and having two assits. The soring wouldnt stop there as Cherem Moises had a goal and three assits, while Anton Gulko had two goals and assit. Even though the game was never close both teams showed great sportsmanship.
Skye Keeshan St. Johnsbury captain said this: " LI and St. J is always a big rivalry. We're close, the big football game, it gets everyone going, but even more in hockey, we play with these kids since we've been five, six playing mites, so you know everyone on the team, you know everyone on the ice, but that doesn't make it any less firece. Everyone wants to win, everyone wants to hit. It's just one of the most exciting games of the year."
With the win for St. Johnsbury Academy they are now 10-7 on the season as Lyndon is 1-11-1 on the season. Lyndon Institutes next game is on February 12th at 6 p.m. against Harwood Union at Fenton W. Chester Arena. While St. Johnsbury Academy will take their game on February 12th on the road to Burr & Burton Academy at 5:45 p.m.
