LYNDON - Baseball season is in full swing. Going into 2013, it may have been easy to overlook the Lyndon Institute Vikings. However, the team is 2-2, and has given up 2 or fewer runs in three of their four games.
The Vikings entered the Division II playoffs as the #7 seed after a 10-6 record in 2012, but were upset 6-2 in the first round by Mount Abraham. The early exit in the playoffs was the Vikings third consecutive first round loss, and meant for a sudden ending for seven senior players.
Going into this season, the Vikings had only two seniors on the team, one of which is out with a leg injury. In this instance, many would consider 2013 a rebuilding process for Lyndon Institute. It's a chance to groom the younger players, without the expectation of winning many games. However, coach Justin Smith thinks his team stands just as good of a chance this season as any.
This season's team has a plethora of juniors, including Davis Guyer. While Smith didn't use the term "ace," Guyer is the team's go-to pitcher, with the most varsity-pitching experience on the team. Guyer pitched great in the team's first game, giving up just 1 run in the first 7 innings. Sophomore Noah Burke later won the game on a base hit to right field.
The Vikings have continued to pitch well, giving up a total of just ten runs through four games. For coach Smith, his goal was for strong pitching and defense, and the Vikings have achieved that thus far.
The Vikings season continues today with an away game against the Windsor Yellowjackets. Windsor is off to a tough start this season at 2-5. The Yellowjackets have given up nine or more runs in four of their seven games, and have yet to give up fewer than four runs. Coincidentally, four runs is the most the Vikings have scored in one game this season. Tonight is a winnable game for Lyndon Institute, that may set the tone for the rest of the season if they can get the bats going.
