District Rezoning & Residential Parking

PLanning Commission 2LYNDON - The Lyndon Planning Commission met last night for the first time since Vermont's Town Meeting Day. After approving last meeting's minutes, the agenda consisted of residential parking rules, district boundaries, and municipal limitations.

Ruling on residential parking in the village commercial district has changed. The village commercial district includes South Street and Broad Street. Previously, there was no requirement for a property manager to provide off-street parking for housing dwellers in the village commercial district. Now property managers are required to provide two parking spots per housing unit. For example, apartment buildings with three housing units will require six parking spaces.

Planning Commission Chair Dan Daley explains why this change was necessary. "It was a safety issue, so that there aren't cars parking in the street, parking in locations they shouldn't be."

After discussing this, the Planning Commission moved on to four requests for district rezoning. The first request concerned land near Charles Road and Tute Hill. The request was to move from a residential zone to commercial zone, but the Planning Commission didn't pass the motion. Two other motions failed to pass as well.

There was one motion to re-zone that did pass last night. David Allard bought eight acres of land on York Street to open a furniture business years ago, and was given commercial zoning for the land. However, the business only occupied three acres and never expanded. He eventually moved the business to the Industrial Park. Allard requested the vacant five acres on York Street revert back to rural/residential territory. That motion was discussed and passed unanimously by the Planning Commission.

The Planning Commission adjourned shortly after, not yet getting to Municipal Limitations. That topic will lead off the next meeting which is scheduled for March 27th at 7pm at the Municipal Building.
