footchase2LYNDON - There was uproar in Lyndonville last night after a domestic assault was reported Wednesday night. The possible assault happened at 47 Church St. The suspect, 24-year-old Kevin Wheeler, allegedly assaulted Julie Shattuck and her 10 month old daughter. When police arrived on scene, Wheeler pushed both victims to the floor and took off on foot.

Police finally found Wheeler in one of Lyndonville's back alleys. Yesterday, Wheeler appeared in court. Benjamin Luna, the state prosecutor, asked for the bail to be set at $25,000, partly because of Wheeler's extensive criminal past.

"Mr. Wheeler does have three prior felony convictions," Luna said, "as well as seventeen misdemeanor convictions. So there is certainly an incentive to flee here, given the criminal liability that Mr. Wheeler is facing. Therefore, the state submits that the cash bail proposed ... is appropriate."

Judge Mary Teachout denied Luna's request. Bail for Wheeler has been set at $5,000.
