How Surging Gas Prices are Affecting the NEK

LYNDON -  People all across the Northeast Kingdom are feeling the impact of the recent high rise in gas prices across the region, as costs at the stations continue to keep rising week after week. Many drivers are feeling the increase, and it makes them rethink what they can do daily, such as in travel work commutes, and even commuting students trying to get back and forth to school.

Local gas stations like Cumberland Farms, Nick Stop and Go have reportedly seen price hikes, with some increases of several cents a day. For a region ranked among the poorest in the state and where long drives are unavoidable, the strain is being felt.

"It's been a real struggle, I'm a commuter student at the school, and not making much money being a full-time college student and traveling back and forth, it's a lot of wear and tear," said Brody Taylor

Gas rise epidemic affecting everyone, though, including the family members of Susie Reed.

"Tremendously, I think people here have to think about tires and food costs are going up, and think about heating. We're in a poor part of the state, and so I do worry; I worry about my parents. They're here and have to cover those costs on Social Security. It's had a really negative impact."

Bob Jordan, a retired man from Lyndon, has resided in the Northeast Kingdom his whole life.

"People are barely surviving, and it's not going to end well."

Community members are being affected day to day and are looking for relief, whether through potential state action, fuel assistance programs, or simply stabilization of prices.
