LYNDON - The Saint Johnsbury Hilltoppers and Burlington Seahorses also hit the ice last night. Both teams came out very aggressive, looking for a much needed victory. Saint Johnsbury failed to capitalize on an early scoring chance as Seahorse goaltender Dan Maurice made an incredible save.
With just 2 minutes left in the second period, Saint Johnsbury Sophomore Justin Carpenter scored the games first goal. Burlington didn't take long to respond, as they netted a goal of their own with 11.4 seconds left. Saint Johnsbury answered immediately with a face-off win and goal from Andrew Biggie.
Both teams had a lot of momentum going into the second period, but Burlington came out stronger. They were able to put up a lot of shots on Hilltopper goalie Ben Greenstein. Halfway through the period, the Seahorses were able to poke one through, and tie things up. Again, Saint Johnsbury had an answer for the Burlington goal. Freshman Jared Rutledge scored a power play goal less than 2 minutes later take the lead once more. Saint Johnsbury looked energized following the goal, and scored two more in the final 36 seconds of period 2.
Going into the period 3 the under-manned Hilltoppers continued to play stron. Defensiveman Moy Cherem scored an early goal, and that one seemed to be the nail in the coffin. Matthew Clarke scored his only goal of the night, and Justin Carpenter scored his second to cap things off. Saint Johnsbury took the victory by a score of 8-2.
All nine Hilltopper skaters had a point, while four players scored three points. Moy Cherem, Brandon Wells, and Even Tirey all had a goal and two assists, while Justin Carpenter had 2 goals and one assist.
Bob Reardon, who is in his first year as Saint Johnsbury's Hockey Coach, was very relieved to win after a long string of losses. Reardon said "We've been struggling all season long. We have a young team, we have a short team. We've been dealing with injuries and sicknesses, and we've been in the losing bracket for a few weeks now and, you know, this win here, it's just incredible. We needed this win."
Last night's win snapped a 9-game losing streak, and puts Saint Johnsbury at 4-12 on the season. They play next at 7:30 on Friday night when they host Northfield.
