Vermont State Police are urging runners to protect themselves when jogging at night in more ways than one.

Police have used social media like twitter to spread awareness about running safety, and they are not that only ones urging caution.

Lyndonville's police chief, whis also Lyndon Institute's cross country coach, Jack Harris, knows the risk or running at night in the dark of night in Vermont. "I think it's important anytime that someone's going to go out. And most of the time as you can tell by my shirt I think if you're going to be out running among traffic or even walking you need to be visible," Harris said.

Harris' son Jason is on the Lyndon Institute cross country team and frequently runs at night. "Back roads of Vermont when people can just be going at whatever speed they feel like, it's usually better for the runner to be able to tell if a car is coming before the car even knows that there's a runner there," Jason said.

Safety officials like Harris and the Vermont State Police suggest carrying a cell phone, running in lit areas, and even wearing a reflective vest to protect from oncoming traffic. Harris also explained that  drivers should be aware of their surroundings, slow down in school zon es, and turn off their high beams so they don't blind runners at night.
